Wood Fence Styles
Choose Your Style
Every yard is different. That's why we build five distinct wood fence styles — each one custom-built on your property to fit your space, your needs, and your budget.
Most Popular
The classic backyard fence. Solid boards side by side with no gaps — total privacy from neighbors, street traffic, and noise. Available in 4, 5, and 6-foot heights. The most popular wood fence we build.
Privacy Fence
Overlapping boards create a layered, dimensional look with zero gaps. Provides complete privacy while allowing some airflow between the boards. A premium upgrade over standard privacy fencing with a more refined appearance.
Board-on-Board Fence
The timeless American classic. Spaced boards in 3 to 4-foot heights — perfect for front yards, garden borders, and curb appeal. Defines your property line without blocking the view.
Picket Fence
Horizontal rails with an open design — perfect for large lots, rural properties, and decorative boundaries. Available in 2, 3, or 4-rail configurations. Great for defining property lines without closing in your yard.
Ranch Rail Fence
Alternating boards on each side of the rail create a fence that looks finished from both sides. Allows airflow while still providing strong privacy. A great choice when both you and your neighbor want a good-looking fence.

Wood Options
Cedar vs. Pressure-Treated
We build with two types of lumber — both are proven to hold up in Indiana weather. Here's how they compare so you can choose what's right for your property and budget.
Pressure-Treated Pine
Best Value
✓ Most affordable wood fence option
✓ Chemically treated to resist rot, decay, and insects
✓ Takes stain and paint well
✓ Widely available — no material wait times
✓ 15–20 year lifespan with proper maintenance
⚠️ May warp or twist slightly as it dries — normal for treated lumber
Cedar
Premium Choice
✓ Naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insects
✓ Beautiful natural grain and warm color
✓ Less prone to warping than pressure-treated
✓ Weathers to a beautiful silver-gray if left unstained
✓ 20–25 year lifespan
⚠️ Higher upfront cost, but less maintenance long-term

Common Questions
Wood Fence FAQ
Should I choose cedar or pressure-treated?
If budget is the priority, go pressure-treated — it's durable and significantly cheaper. If you want a premium look with less maintenance long-term, go cedar. Both hold up great in Indiana weather. We can help you decide during your estimate.
How long does a wood fence last?
A pressure-treated fence lasts 15–20 years. Cedar lasts 20–25 years. Proper maintenance like staining every 2–3 years can extend the life even further.
Do I need to stain my fence?
It's not required, but it's recommended. Staining protects the wood from moisture, UV damage, and extends the fence's lifespan. We recommend staining within the first year after installation (after the wood has dried) and every 2–3 years after that.
How long does installation take?
Most residential wood fence projects are completed in 1–2 days. Larger properties or difficult terrain may take an extra day. We'll give you an estimated timeline during your free estimate.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Indianapolis?
Most residential fences in Indianapolis don't require a permit, as long as they meet the city's height and zoning requirements. However, some surrounding cities and counties do require permits, and HOAs often have their own approval process. We handle the permit process when one is needed — the homeowner just covers the permit fee.
Can I see the good side of the fence from my yard?
Yes — the "good side" (flat, finished side) typically faces your yard on a standard privacy fence. If you want both sides to look finished, a shadowbox or board-on-board style is the way to go.
What's the difference between a privacy fence and board-on-board?
A standard privacy fence has boards placed side by side with minimal gaps. Board-on-board overlaps the boards for a layered look — it costs a bit more but provides complete privacy with more visual depth and a more premium appearance.
Do you handle old fence removal?
Yes. Old fence removal is an add-on service at $4 per linear foot. We tear out the old fence and haul it away — often the same day we install your new one.
